I offer two styles of newborn photography: natural (unposed) and styled (posed) portraits. This page shows examples of natural newborn photos and will help you decide whether this style is right for you.
My unposed, natural newborn photos are beautifully clean, simple and modern. We’ll focus on your love and connection, with plenty of time to cuddle up and enjoy your baby as I capture your new bond.
This style of newborn photography has a ‘lifestyle’ feel, telling the story of your new family unit in a series of authentic, minimalist images.
We’ll use simple, timeless wraps to keep your little one cosy, but no (or fewer) props. I’ll capture your baby’s details and personality, from their smiles and wide-eyed expressions to their teeny tiny fingers and toes. Whether your little one loves sleeping with their hands by their ears or tucked up by their chin, that’s what we’ll capture!
For the family shots, I’ll show you where to sit for the most flattering light, and guide you only as much as you want or need. In some of the images only parts of your face will be visible, and in some mum and dad are simply an out-of-focus frame around the edges of the image, drawing your eye straight towards baby.
We’ll prioritise showing your intimacy and interactions over perfect poses and expressions. This is about you being with and breathing in the smell of your baby and falling in love all over again, rather than grinning down the lens.
Natural newborn photos are perfect for you if:
- You prefer unposed images which focus on your love and connection rather than your faces and expressions.
- You’re looking for a very modern, contemporary style.
- You dislike traditional, posed portraits and newborn photos with props.
- You want to be included in the family portraits in a more subtle way, with baby as the main subject.
Of course, many clients ask for a mix of natural newborn photos and styled, posed portraits. This means they can keep and display the style they prefer, while using giving others to family members who prefer the opposite style. A mix is also perfect if you’re not sure which style you prefer, or if you don’t have strong preferences!
You’re welcome to bring a special blanket, a loved outfit and/or a special teddy bear to personalise your shoot further – just let me know in advance so I can include it in my shoot notes.
