Bluebells, evening sun and a friendly, happy Beagle: sometimes dog portrait photography really is a walk in the park…
This is Millie, a beautiful 3-year-old Beagle. She is friendly and extraordinarily well-trained, thanks to the agility exercises and competitions she takes part in with her owners, Hannah and Craig.
She is also inquisitive, intelligent and easily bored, as is typical for Beagles. This meant we kept to lots of quick, short stops for portraits before moving on to new sights and smells.
As it’s May and the bluebells are covering the forest floor like a shimmering, magical carpet, we took the opportunity to coax Millie to pause amongst them, in a patch of evening sunlight:
Nearby was another pool of light, behind a log used to section off the path. I love the shapes within Millie’s form here, with her head curved towards her tail, and her tail curved towards her head:
We moved on from the bluebells and headed deeper into the forest. The sun was dipping lower towards the horizon, and cast this awesome shadow on the forest floor:
Again, I love Millie’s form here, with her tail and muzzle both stretched and held aloft.
We wandered on a little further, and came across a fallen tree. This provided the opportunity for a shot with Millie nobly perched high up on one of the cut sections, framed on three sides by the structure of the trunk:
Millie loves to run. As we walked from place to place, she zipped across the path in front and behind us before disappearing into the undergrowth and reappearing somewhere else a few seconds later. Her ears come to life when she’s flying across the ground, so I was keen to capture her in high-speed motion, too:
Afterwards, Hannah said:
“They’re really lovely Sarah, thank you. Love the lighting and the colours.”
Craig added:
“Sarah Plater, these pics are amazing and it was so much fun! Thank you!”
