Handsome young Lennox is the first child of Josie and Ben, who are based in High Wycombe. They whisked him up to Bicester to capture his newborn-ness in a series of simply styled portraits.
Baby Lennox arrived, six days young, and already curious about the world around him:
I love how he’s looking straight down the lens here, which makes it feel as though he’s looking right at you. His steady gaze, calm expression and hand position all contribute to an impression of intelligent deliberation. Pretty impressive for someone born less than a week previously!
Lennox started to tire shortly after finishing his assessment of the camera lens, with a big yawn marking the imminent onset of sleep. Every time I see this portrait of Lennox, it makes me yawn too. That’s a good thing apparently, as it proves I’m a nice person.
Lennox is really rocking the wise philosopher look here, in a pose that’s clearly inspired by this Socrates statue. I’d like to take the credit, but Lennox took up this position all by himself.
Mum Josie loves (and knows) her flora, so I ordered in some fresh eucalyptus and gladiolus (the birth flower for August) from Signature Flowers, a Bicester-based florist. I love this shot of Lennox’s hands gently wrapped around one of the eucalyptus stems.
Josie and Ben’s home looks straight out of an interior design book, with lots of natural textures, bare wooden floors and one-off pieces of antique furniture. They use (and love) a lot of greys, so I wanted to echo that colour in the portraits. This ensure the images will complement the decor when displayed on the walls.
I love how perfect and peaceful Lennox looks here. It’s a very simply styled shot with just a twist of detail added by the knot in the grey mohair wrap that Lennox is snuggled up in. When you’re this cute, you don’t need much else in the image with you!
We finished the shoot with a handful of family photos, with perfect chins and grins from mum and dad in this traditional-style portrait.
I asked Josie to give Lennox a gentle kiss and – like magic – we were rewarded with this incredible little smile.
I wanted to finish by creating a completely different style of family portrait, so that Josie and Ben would have maximum choice. They loved this one, with little Lennox snuggled between them, and the black and white conversion adding to the sense of connection between them all.
Afterwards, Josie said:
“Wow. Just received our final pictures from Lennie’s newborn shoot. Sarah Plater is incredible. I cannot recommend her enough. She was so gentle with Lennox during the shoot when he was just 6 days old – made us feel completely at ease. Such stunning pictures… and then the gift box that our order arrived in! Lovely personal touch. Thank you Sarah.”
