If handsome little Ethan looks snug and secure, that’s because his parents are helping to keep all of us safe, thanks to their jobs as full-time police officers. The pair met at work, so it seemed only right to celebrate their role in the force with this police helmet newborn portrait (see image below).
June 2019 Update: The above portrait was selected as the best newborn portrait in the MPA Central Region Annual Awards, with Sarah Plater chosen as the Newborn Photographer of the Year 2019 for that region (covering Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire).
March 2019 Update: The above portrait has been awarded a Highly Commended Rosette from the Master Photographers Association (MPA). MPA Chairman Ray Lowe commented, “[This is a] perfect newborn… absolutely superbly done. Well dressed, well cocooned, well controlled, well lit, [with] the right space all around the picture.”
Please note that there’s a little bit of newborn photography magic involved in creating a shot like the one below! Things aren’t quite as they seem, so please don’t try anything like this at home 🙂
As well as the police-themed newborn portrait, Ethan’s mum and dad were also looking for a selection of beautiful images to capture him in these precious first few days.
Ethan arrived in the world a couple of weeks early. This was fine with his parents, because otherwise Ethan’s birth was looking likely to coincide with his dad’s birthday. Although… are you allowed double portions of cake if it’s a double celebration?! I reckon so 🙂
Mum and dad’s highlight so far has been getting him home from the hospital and settled in his own bed. With all the noise and drama of a hospital environment, there’s something so wonderful about bring your baby back to the comfort and familiarity of home, where you can start creating your lives together as a new family.
At 14 days’ old Ethan has totally mastered sleeping already… Well, during the day, at least. His parents are working on the night time sleeps…
Happily, our newborn shoot took place during the daytime, so I got plenty of snuggles and cuddles with this little sleepyhead.
Outside of public service, mum and dad have plenty of other skills they can pass on to little Ethan. Mum is a superb baker, but manages to burn off those cake calories by also playing competitive netball. Meanwhile, dad is an accomplished semi-pro photographer, with sports event coverage and several weddings under his belt. So little Ethan will have a head start if he wants to become a chef, athlete or photographer!
After seeing their newborn photos, mum and dad said:
“Really pleased with our shots, we have some great memories to treasure and can’t wait to see them around the house. Sarah’s studio is a relaxing and welcoming environment and Sarah really made us feel at home. Sarah has a really lovely manner, was great with our baby and so calming. Sarah allowed plenty of time to get the shots and was really patient. I’d definitely recommend and use Sarah again.”
