Sonny was as excited about meeting his parents as they were to meet him. Not only did he arrive a few days early, but his delivery at the Spires maternity unit was so fast, the staff barely had time to fill the bath for his water birth.
Nevertheless, the whole experience sounds magical: his mum Amy helped deliver him herself, pulling him out and into the water while Dad Jake supported her.
“Jake has taken to fatherhood like a duck to water,” Amy told me during our newborn photoshoot at my Bicester studio.
Actually, I think they both have. They’re super laid back and work as a tag team to care for him. This strong start looks set to continue, as the couple are lucky enough to work from home most days of the week, which means that help is never far away if one of them needs an extra pair of hands!
Talking of hands, Jake particularly adores Sonny’s perfect little fingers, while Amy adores his tiny nose.
Despite Sonny being a little bundle of absolute joy, his one- and four-year-old cousins are not yet quite sure what to make of him yet, partly because all he currently does is sleep and also because Sonny is the first boy in the immediate family and therefore new territory.
However, Amy is sure that in no time the cousins will be thick as thieves and causing mayhem for their parents!
Amy’s sister has two girls, making Sonny the first grandson on the maternal side, and very first grandchild on Jake’s side.
As well as running his own business, Jake is also an experienced drummer. He travels across the country to perform at weddings as part of an incredibly talented band called Funkified – their new promotional video is just stunning, and the perfect way to showcase their skills and professionalism (go take a look!).
While Jake is making beats, Amy likes to spend the time in a slightly quieter fashion: completing miniature works of art in the form of cross-stitch pictures. She’s particularly drawn to Japanese culture, and can often be found stitching geishas into fabric.
The pair are total foodies, and Jake in particular is very keen to try Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck restaurant one day soon. They love to save up and go out for a special dinner, so are looking forward to when Sonny is old enough to try new food!
For now though, all Sonny wants in life is a little bit of milk and a few cuddles – and his parents are more than happy to meet those needs and provide a lot of love, too 🙂
After our shoot, Amy said:
“We cannot recommend Sarah enough for her beautiful photography!! The whole process was very straight forward and Sarah was accommodating when things didn’t quite go to plan with dates and our shoot needed rescheduling. This is our first time doing something like this and my husband and I are not particularly comfortable in photos but Sarah made us feel very at ease and the photos show exactly that. Sarah was very patient and gentle with our newborn and is clearly a pro at dealing with accidents on set!! Thank you Sarah for helping us to document a precious moment in our lives ?”
