One of the advantages of being a family photographer is the ability to create images as gifts for my own loved ones.
When my sister-in-law Alison was planning a short stay at ours a few weeks ago, I realised it would be the perfect time to capture some up-to-date photos of my youngest nieces, six-year-old Eliza and two-and-a-half-year-old Nora.
As a bonus, I knew I could have the pictures ready for two Mothers’ Day gifts, one for my mother-in-law and, of course, one for Ali, too.
Until recently, Eliza was particularly interested in dinosaurs. She could name more dinosaurs than I ever realised existed, and had learned their various diets (herbivore, carnivore etc) and abilities.
Her disappointment at the lack of dinosaur intel in the family was clearest when my husband, known as Uncle Badger, drew a picture of a Brontosaurus at Eliza’s request.
He took his time to include every detail, from the long tail and arched back through to the impressive neck, beady little eyes and teddy-bear-like ears.
He proudly presented the finished artwork to Eliza, who sighed heavily and buried her head in her hands.
“No, Badger,” she said, her words threaded through with frustration, “dinosaurs don’t have ears!”
Now dinosaurs have been replaced by Nifflers as the main focus of Eliza’s interest, and she tells me she has 16 of them to take care of!
Luckily they are harmless, rodent-like creatures that don’t cause too much trouble (unless you have hidden treasure at home, that is!).
Nora is interested in exploring and touching everything, especially things that her big sister has just started playing with!
Nora is a BIG fan of Peppa Pig, and it’s been incredibly gratifying giving her books featuring the famous pink pig. She stares at every detail with her eyes wide in delight, slowly turning the pages and uttering an awe-struck ‘wow’ as each new scene is unveiled.
Nora also loves peeling and placing stickers in the Peppa Pig books, although this is a bit stressful for her mum as Nora doesn’t like to place them in the spots they are supposed to go!
That could be the early signs of a creative spirit, or maybe a mischievous one – Nora was recently spotted spiriting away a bottle of hand sanitiser at our home, while giggling away to herself!
It’s these moments and memories that photos help to preserve over time, which makes them such a wonderful gift, especially for an occasion like Mother’s Day.
So a very happy Mother’s Day to all you fab mums out there while also remembering those who have lost their mother, those who have lost children, those who have chosen not be mothers and those who yearn to become mothers. Sending love to you all! 🙂
