When Maria’s role was one of thousands cut by Microsoft recently, she was worried about her next move, especially with so many other talented professionals in similar roles on the job market at the same time.
However, she submitted for a few roles and was delighted to be offered an even more senior role at Amazon.
That meant it was time to get her headshot picture updated – both for her new badge but also LinkedIn!
To celebrate, she did her research and picked out a pearl necklace as a treat for herself, travelling into London to try it on and bring it home to show her husband, Ian.
Maria and Ian met at work in a previous role.
For a long time they simply enjoyed getting to know each other while working together on different projects.
Maria particularly loved how competent Ian was in his role, and the respect his colleagues showed him as a result.
His dry sense of humour was also a huge delight.
However, before meeting Ian, Maria had always been told that relationships were effortful: something you have to work really hard at.
Happily, she’s found the opposite to be true with Ian. Living with him has been the easiest and most joyful thing she’s ever done.
They eloped to Las Vegas ten years ago and haven’t looked back since.
They are opposites in some ways, with Maria being much more extraverted, and have found they compliment each other well.
As she used to travel a lot, Maria suggested the couple get a dog to keep Ian company while she was away.
This has backfired somewhat as Joy, a greyhound, has become the firm favourite.
Indeed, when Ian recently got an iPad engraved, he opted to personalise it with a picture of Joy!
Maria told me this with good humour – and I did notice that her jewellery box had a greyhound embroidered on the top, too!
Of the two of them, Maria is the organiser, planning the couple’s trips and days out.
That’s probably because she works as a project manager – a job her beloved late mother never quite understood!
At the moment she’s making the most of garden leave by fitting in a few extra sessions at the gym (weights and yoga are her current favourites).
She’s also looking forward to a yoga retreat in Norfolk.
After that, she’ll be fully recharged and impatient to start making an impact in her new role.
She’ll be bringing with her all those skills and attributes that have made her so successful to date in both her professional and personal lives.
Best of all, she’s now got polished and professional photos to match!
