Sports and fitness model portfolio with David

I recently met the lovely David, who’s looking to break into sports and fitness modelling.

Here are ten Sport & Fitness Photoshoot Prep Tips if you’re interested in getting some portfolio images for this niche (and – as always – seek professional medical advice where appropriate):

  1. Stick to your normal routine—don’t try anything extreme at the last minute and avoid overtraining as the fatigue will show in your posture and face. Don’t crash diet, either, as it can flatten your muscles and make you look exhausted.
  1. Bring multiple outfits including sport bras / crop tops (for women) and fitted vests / shirts (for men). Include leggings, shorts, joggers, neutral tones and one or two bright colours for variety.

  1. Avoid mixing extremely light tones with dark ones (e.g. blacks and whites) and opt for more harmonious tones within each outfit. Patterns and graphics can distract from the face and tend to date quickly. I recommend wearing plain designs with block colours instead. Avoid loud logos unless it’s a sponsored shoot.
  1. Eat clean and balanced meals in the weeks leading up to your photoshoot, including plenty of lean proteins, complex carbs and healthy fats. Avoid drinking alcohol or eating salty meals the day before and get a good night’s sleep. Eat a light, balanced meal with both protein and carbohydrates on the morning of your photoshoot.

  1. Moisturise daily and avoid getting sunburnt in the days leading up to your photoshoot. Consider getting a light, natural tan and ideally a professional spray tan. Get a clean haircut a few days before the shoot (so it has time to settle). Wash your hair the night before the photoshoot. Keep hands and nails neat and if shaving or waxing body hair, do it a couple of days beforehand to avoid irritation.
  1. Practice power poses and natural athletic stances in a mirror. Think about movements such as lunges, running poses, weightlifting and stretching.

  1. Pack a kit including water, a light snack (e.g. a banana or a protein bar), a resistance band (for muscle pumps before shots) and a sweat towel. Bring oil or body lotion for a slight sheen (if you want that look).
  1. Stay hydrated. Some models slightly reduce water intake one to two days before the photoshoot for extra definition, but only if you know what you’re doing and it’s safe for you to do so.

  1. Pump up before each set of images: quick push-ups, squats or use of a resistance band can help to bring out muscle tone.
  1. Lastly, stay relaxed and confident: positive energy matters as much as a great physique!
