Kumiko thought her chance to make a living as a fine art jeweller had been and gone.
After 14 years working as an art teacher in a local Bicester school, she decided to throw her hat in the ring for a Queen Elizabeth scholarship.

She was shortlisted for an interview but was so nervous that she fought back tears on the day.
More tears came when she was told she was successful.

She handed in her notice at the school, who offered her more money to stay.
Kumiko was very tempted but her children asked her if she’d regret turning down such an incredible opportunity, so she said ‘yes’ to the scholarship.

Kumiko uses the traditional Japanese beeswax technique of mitsuro-hikime in her work.

Through Instagram she had been in contact with a master silversmith, who had offered to train her in-person.

Thanks to the scholarship, Kumiko was able to travel over for a three-week intensive course with him, and came back full of ideas and inspiration for pieces she wanted to create.

She got in contact with me as she now hopes to show her pieces at the Goldmsiths Fair in September, and needs professional photography for her application.

As you can see, her stunning work is all hand crafted, and is visibly inspired by the organic shapes found in water and nature.

“I wanted some good images of my jewellery for a show’s application. Sarah took such beautiful images. She gave me quick response every time from my request with such a kind manner. I am so happy to find her as she is local to me. Such a talented photographer! Thank you for the amazing photos.” Kumiko
