It may be grey, cold and drizzly outside, but these newborn portraits will warm you up from the inside out. Introducing sweet little 9-day-old Tyler…
Tyler is the newest arrival in the Prestidge family, joining mum Catherine, dad Nathan and 17-month-old big brother Theo. The family wanted to capture Tyler in his newborn state, as mum and dad know he will grow and change so quickly it will be hard to remember how tiny he once was.
I’m so honoured to be trusted to capture this once-in-a-lifetime stage of a new person’s time in the world. My job is to immortalise these precious few weeks so they can be remembered and treasured forever. From miniature fingers and toes to perfect lips and sleepy eyes, newborn babies really are a little bit of heaven sent down to earth.
Here’s a sneak peek of some of my favourite images from the shoot:
There really is nothing cuter than a sleeping newborn, and here’s the proof! I love soft, soft lighting and simple colour schemes, to keep all the focus on little Tyler’s peaceful face.
A gentle black and white gives a timeless look to this newborn portrait, with Tyler resting his head on his tiny hands. He’s tightly swaddled here, so feels safe, comfortable and completely oblivious to his first photoshoot!
“Cleaning and scrubbing can wait ’til tomorrow
For babies grow up we’ve learned to our sorrow,
So quiet down cobwebs and dust go to sleep
I’m rocking my baby, and babies don’t keep.”Ruth Hulburt Hamilton
I love how cosy Tyler looks here, surrounded by the pure wool fibres of a soft, white Flokati rug (handmade in Greece by traditional craftsmen and women).
I love the smooth transition of light to shadow across young Tyler’s face here: black and white newborn portraits help to highlight subtle tonal details such as these.
Here I’ve used a shallow depth of field to throw the foreground and background out of focus. This gives depth to the image, and keeps your attention on Tyler’s adorable face.
Is it just me, or does Tyler have a little smile on his face here? One thing is for sure – he looks as content and peaceful as a little person can get!
Afterwards, mum Catherine said:
“Sarah is so lovely and amazing at her job – it’s not easy trying to photograph a non-sleepy newborn but she did it with amazing results [and] we love our pictures so, so much. Highly recommend.”
