“I was worried the worst had happened,” Grant told me. That was the moment in hospital when lights started flashing, alarms began ringing and doctors’ voices suddenly escalated before they whisked his wife – 42-week pregnant Helen – down the corridor.
“I was just standing in the room on my own, wondering what to do next when someone came back down with scrubs, and told me to put them on. I followed him into the operating theatre and straight away I relaxed. Helen was laughing with one of the staff in there, so that’s when I knew everything must be ok.”
“I’d had painkillers at that point,” Helen said, “before that I was struggling to think of anything else but getting through each contraction! The baby’s heartbeat had started fluctuating and that’s when the emergency C-section procedure kicked in.”
Happily, gorgeous Mila Rose was born shortly after, weighing a perfect 8lb 3oz.
“You hear about the wave of love that people feel when they first meet their baby,” Helen said, “and I was nervous that I wouldn’t have that. But I didn’t need to worry – we both felt a more powerful love than anything else we’ve ever experienced the moment we saw her. We burst into tears of joy and haven’t been able to take our eyes off her since. I could look at her all day.”
The couple travelled to my newborn photography studio in Bicester, Oxfordshire, to capture their new arrival’s perfect features. Mila has an amazing pout, the cutest chubby cheeks and the sweetest little newborn toes.
The couple hadn’t been planning on having kids, but now Mila is here they can’t imagine a world without her. Helen told me what a great dad Grant is already, getting involved in every aspect of looking after Mila.
“My dad was great with us, spending time playing and interacting with me and my siblings,” Helen said, “and that was back when men didn’t even get paternity leave and the expectation was on the woman to do all the childrearing. I’m so glad that Grant is even more involved, and we each take turns with nappy changes, feeds and getting up to comfort her in the night.”
“Helen is already a brilliant mum,” Grant added, “She’s so good with Mila, and just seems such a natural at it all. She’s very patient and calm with her, which is how we both like to do things – no dramas!”
Mila’s life may have started with a dramatic entrance, but I’ve no doubt she’s going to have a relaxed, happy and drama-free time growing up with her very chilled-out, loving and super-affectionate parents 🙂
After our newborn shoot, Helen said:
“We booked in with Sarah for a newborn photo shoot for our 8 day old daughter and we could not be more pleased with the photos. Sarah has such an amazing eye and really is very talented! Sarah made us all feel so relaxed throughout the photo shoot and even went as far as making sure she knew what we drank beforehand so it was ready for when we arrived. We were well taken care of! The photos will be cherished for many many years to come and we will definitely be wanting Sarah to capture future occasions for us. Would highly recommend to all.”
