Newborn photos with 5-week-old Oscar

November 2022 update: The above image has just won a Highly Commended Award in the monthly competition run by the Master Photographers Association (MPA).

Judge Sarah Tate FMPA commented, “Absolutely gorgeous: the wrapping is beautiful, the background is beautiful; I couldn’t fault it in any way, I love the expression on baby’s face and your editing is lovely. I honestly can’t see anything wrong with that. It’s beautiful. It would sit nicely in a [qualification] panel and I think it would definitely get a merit in the national awards. Absolutely lovely and beautifully handled.”

I last saw Arlo when he was just five weeks old. His dad James was back at work so his mum Corrie and Nan Sue brought him in for some newborn photos.

Now he’s two years old and back in my studio, bringing a tiny VIP with him: his brand new little brother, Oscar.

Arlo even helped to chose Oscar’s name.

James and Corrie were trying to help prepare Arlo for his brother’s arrival by talking about him a lot early on.

To this end, they wanted to chose a name early in the pregnancy so Arlo would get used to the idea of there being a little person in mummy’s tummy who would soon come out to join the family.

Oscar was one of the names they had shortlisted, and Arlo heard his mum and dad saying it aloud to try it out.

From that moment on, Arlo referred to the baby as Oscar, and the name has stuck since then.

Arlo was keen to get stuck in helping even before baby’s arrival, offering juice to mum’s baby bump and giving the bump lots of cuddles (sweetly pronounced as ‘duddles’ ?).

Arlo loves anything active: hide and seek, chase, playing football, dancing to music.

Corrie tells me he starts to climb the walls if she keeps him indoors too long, so they go out every day, whatever the weather.

Oscar has been a lot calmer and quieter during the pregnancy than Arlo was, so Corrie is hoping that will translate to a calmer baby, too!

Whatever his temperament, one thing is for sure: little Oscar has already got a best friend who will teach him how to play all the games and sing all the nursery rhymes.

Indeed, when Corrie first told Arlo that baby Oscar had finally arrived, Arlo didn’t believe her until he heard Oscar crying downstairs.

Delighted, he zoomed down as fast as his legs would carry him, and has been kissing him, cuddling him and helping fetch things for him ever since.

With just two and a bit years between them, I just know they’re going to adore each other even more as Oscar grows up and can start interacting and playing with his adoring big brother. 🙂
