James has a degree, MA and PhD in mathematics, so it’s fair to say he knows a thing or two about numbers.
It’s a passion he’s keen to share, and has been lucky enough to make a career out of doing so.
Indeed, he coordinates the admission process for the undergraduate maths course at Oxford and spends the rest of the year on outreach projects to promote mathematics to ‘anyone who will listen’.
He also creates content for the UNIQ Summer Schools and Opportunity Oxford, and runs a weekly MAT livestream from July to November for people thinking of studying maths at university.
As if that wasn’t enough, James also hosts the Oxford Online Maths Club from January to June each year, which has super-curricular mathematics ideas for people interested in maths.
The club was James’ idea, and is something that he started during the pandemic lockdowns.
It’s been so popular that he’s continued it, and the videos achieve an impressive 1,000+ views on average.
They also complement James’ in-person outreach work, giving maths talks to schools and colleges.
Indeed, if you’re a teacher or you help run a maths club at your school or sixth-form college, and you would like to hear about chaos / geometric series / symmetry / fluid dynamics / maths at university / maths admissions for Oxford, please do get in touch.
Despite his current allegiance to Oxford, James originally studied at Cambridge.
His parents are both Oxbridge graduates. With his mum a lawyer and his dad an engineer, it’s clear where James’ brainpower comes from!
After a few years of renting locally, he’s now moved into his own home on the same estate as me in Bicester, which meant he could walk over for his headshot session.
James particularly liked the style of images I’d captured for a previous client, Andrew (see them here), so I made sure to include a couple of those in the shot plan for James’ session.
He also brought a unique prop in with him, a homemade cube divided into pentagons to make a 12-sided dodecahedron.
The word dodecahedron comes from Greek, and means ‘twelve’ and ‘faces’.
I hadn’t realised how much the world of mathematics overlapped with so much else, including shapes and language.
Indeed, there’s such a huge scope to mathematics that James is sure never to find his interest limited. 🙂
“I had some business headshots taken with Sarah. She was great! She sent over helpful advice beforehand, and she was friendly and patient through the shoot. Sarah never had to ask me to smile – we had a fun conversation throughout the shoot and I hardly noticed when she was taking photos. I’d highly recommend Sarah, even if you don’t have an adorable newborn baby like most of the reviewers here :)”
