Newborn photos with 10-day-old Theo

When I saw this family for Aria’s newborn photoshoot (see the images here), they showed me a fantastic way to let their friends and family know they had a baby on the way.

They told whoever they were with that they should take a selfie together, then held up their phone as though to take the shot.

However, the phone was on video mode, not photo mode, and instead of taking a picture they delivered some big news: they were having a baby.

This way, they captured the genuine reaction – the surprise, the shock and the smiles – of each of their loved ones as they shared their good news.

This time, three-year old Aria was the one who got to deliver the headlines.

With the video running, Aria’s mum Hannah or dad Joe would ask why they’d been to the doctor earlier that week.

“To see the baby in mummy’s tummy!” Aria would happily announce, cueing lots of happy reactions!

Indeed, Joe and Hannah are doing an amazing job of recording milestone moments for posterity.

Joe showed me another video capturing Aria’s first interaction with baby Theo.

In the video Aria enters the bedroom still wearing her PJs and looking both nervous and excited.

She comes over to where mum is feeding Theo, saying ‘Baby!’ over and again in her soft, melodic voice.

Hannah told me that since then, Aria has been asserting herself in her new role, sometimes insisting to mum and dad that ‘I’m the big sister”, and that she’s therefore in charge!

She’s certainly shown an ongoing interest in being the grown-up, with nursery staff always reporting to mum and dad that Aria has spent most of her day playing with and caring for the toy babies!

On seeing their children together, Joe and Hannah tell me there’s one key emotion that rises to the top: pride.

Joe tells me that there’s nothing he can do or achieve that will come close to that feeling of pride that he gets from watching Aria and Theo grow and develop.

Of course, there are challenges. Joe told me that a recent trip to a fireworks display was stressful, with a traffic-clogged drive and parking struggles and then getting everyone out of the car and into the event.

But as soon as the first firework exploded little Aria looked up and said, “Wow!” with a face full of awe, Joe knew instantly that it had all been worth it.

And with so many adventures still to look forward to: another trip to Glastonbury (this time as a family of four), a wedding in Mauritius and – hopefully – one or both children following in daddy’s footsteps by taking an interest in ice hockey – there will be many more ‘wows’ still to enjoy. 🙂
