I first met Smita and Jyoti at their maternity photoshoot with me (see the images here).
In late November they returned with the most perfect new arrival, five-week-old Neev.
Neev’s name means foundation, and he has a nickname too: Rig, which refers to a sacred scripture chapter.
Neev was very impatient to meet his mum and dad, arriving 17 days early.
Both Smita and Jyoti were so overcome with emotion that they cried tears of joy on seeing their baby for the first time.
These first few weeks have since gone by in a blur.
Smita is looking forward to Neev’s first smiles while Jyoti can’t wait to hear Neev speak his first words.
Those words could be in English or Assamese, the official language for the north-eastern Indian state of Assam where Neev’s parents originate from, and which Smita and Jyoti are teaching to Neev.
Assam is also where Smita and Jyoti married three years ago, in between the pandemic restrictions.
Between them, they had 1,800 guests over ten days, culminating in a midnight wedding ceremony.
This was followed by a honeymoon in the Maldives, where they were able to relax and recover from the festivities.
Since that time, they’ve been looking forward to starting a family, and are delighted with Neev’s arrival.
I can’t wait to see which characteristics Neev inherits from his parents.
Smita is bubbly and vivacious, waking up full of energy. In contrast, Jyoti is calmer, quieter and more serious.
Jyoti loves to sleep – the bedroom is his favourite of all the rooms in the house – whereas Smita can’t wait to get on with the day each morning.
Whoever he grows up to be like most, I’ve no doubt that Neev will benefit from the best of both worlds.
In so many ways, he’s already a winner – his mum and dad are the sweetest, loveliest couple, and no baby could want for more loving, more prepared or more excited parents than he has.
